Every muscle contraction is powered by adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell's energy currency, but the muscle stores only a small amount of it, so ATP has to be regenerated continuously during exercise. The body has three energy systems for this, and which one predominates depends on how hard and how long the effort is, from a few seconds of maximal power to hours of steady endurance. Carbohydrate and fat are the main fuels that feed these systems.
