Overview

Exercise testing measures how the body responds to physical effort, and its central laboratory output is peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2), the highest oxygen uptake achieved on a test and a strong measure of aerobic fitness; the term maximal rate of oxygen uptake (VO2 max) is reserved for a test that shows a plateau or other convincing evidence that a true maximum has been reached. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) clinician, physiological assessment turns vague questions about fitness and fatigue into objective information that supports diagnosis, exercise prescription and the monitoring of training, always interpreted alongside the clinical picture rather than in isolation.
