Overview

The nervous system carries the signals that drive and control movement, and its interaction with muscle, neuromuscular control, is what turns intention into smooth, coordinated action. Nerves conduct information rapidly between the brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body, while a network of sensors, reflexes and control centres continuously adjusts movement and keeps joints stable. For sport and exercise medicine (SEM), this matters in several ways: peripheral nerves can be injured or entrapped in sport, joint injuries blunt the proprioception that protects a joint, and neuromuscular and balance training is central to both rehabilitation and injury prevention.
