Overview

Tendons and ligaments are the dense connective tissues that hold the musculoskeletal system together. A tendon connects muscle to bone and transmits the force of contraction into movement, while a ligament connects bone to bone and stabilises a joint, guiding and limiting its motion. Both are far from inert straps: energy-storing tendons in particular store and return elastic energy, both contribute to proprioception, and both adapt to the loads placed on them. For sport and exercise medicine (SEM), understanding their structure and how they behave under load explains a great deal of everyday practice, from why tendons develop overuse pain and heal slowly to how ligament sprains destabilise a joint, and it underpins the loading-based rehabilitation these tissues need.
