Overview

Repetitive impact, pressure and moisture make nail problems common in athletes, particularly in the feet. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) doctor, most are minor and mechanical, but a few require prompt action or specialist referral, and one, a pigmented nail without a clear injury, must never be dismissed.

The nail unit and where common sport-related conditions arise: subungual haematoma under the plate, fungal infection from the distal edge, paronychia of the nail fold, and an ingrown edge.
