Acne mechanica is a form of acne, sometimes called sport-induced acne, that is triggered or worsened by mechanical factors acting on the skin: heat, pressure, occlusion and repeated friction. It is common where equipment or clothing presses and rubs against sweaty skin, and it can occur in anyone, whether or not they already have ordinary acne, although pre-existing acne makes it more likely. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) doctor, the value is in recognising the characteristic pattern, distinguishing it from conditions that look similar but are treated differently, and managing it largely by reducing the mechanical trigger.
