Overview

Gait analysis is the systematic assessment of how a person walks or runs, and it is a core clinical skill in sport and exercise medicine (SEM). Watching someone move reveals pain, weakness, stiffness and neurological problems that a static examination can miss, and it links symptoms to how a patient loads their limbs. In musculoskeletal (MSK) and sports practice it guides diagnosis, footwear and orthotic decisions, targeted rehabilitation and return-to-sport judgements. Most gait analysis in clinic is observational, with instrumented tools available when more detail is needed. This page covers the gait cycle, the common abnormal patterns and what they mean, and the methods available, with running-specific mechanics covered in the companion topic on running and movement biomechanics.
