Overview

The body holds its core temperature within a narrow range, close to 37 degrees Celsius, balancing the heat it produces against the heat it loses, with the hypothalamus acting as the thermostat. Exercise generates a large heat load, and losing that heat depends heavily on sweating, which ties temperature control closely to fluid and electrolyte balance. In hot or humid conditions the body can struggle to keep up, and problems at either extreme, too much heat or too much fluid, can be dangerous. For sport and exercise medicine (SEM), this matters most at events and pitchside, where understanding how the body sheds heat and manages fluid helps in recognising and preventing the problems of the heat.
