Professionalism is the set of values and behaviours that maintain trust between doctors, their patients and the public, and it underpins everything a doctor does. In the UK, these standards are set by the General Medical Council (GMC), the independent regulator that holds the medical register, grants the licence to practise, oversees revalidation, and can act where a doctor's fitness to practise is in question. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) doctor, professionalism carries particular tests, from working under the gaze of the media to managing commercial interests and competing pressures. This page sets out the GMC's role and its core guidance, how professionalism applies in the sporting setting, and the expectations around honesty, candour and raising concerns.
