Professionalism is the set of values and behaviours that keeps the trust of patients and the public, and in the UK the General Medical Council (GMC) sets the standards every doctor must meet.
The GMC holds the medical register, grants the licence to practise, oversees revalidation and acts when a doctor's fitness to practise is in question. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) doctor, sport adds its own tests: the public eye, commercial interests, and pressure from a club or a result.
