Dual Loyalty and the Team Doctor

Dual loyalty is the strain a sport and exercise medicine (SEM) doctor faces when obligations to the athlete as patient compete with obligations to the club, governing body or event that employs them.

When the interests align there is no difficulty. When they diverge, for example when a club wants a player available and the doctor judges that playing risks harm, recognising the tension and protecting clinical independence become central to practising ethically.
