Exercise in Adults

Exercise Medicine

Overview

Physical activity is one of the most effective things adults can do for their health, described by the UK Chief Medical Officers (CMO) as a miracle cure were it a drug. For adults aged 19 to 64, regular activity lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, several cancers, depression and premature death, and supports a healthy weight, better sleep and mental wellbeing. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) doctor, knowing the baseline recommendations and how to help people meet them is central to prevention. This page sets out the UK and World Health Organization (WHO) guidance for adults, how they compare, the place of strength and sedentary time, the benefits, and how to help people start safely.
