Impairment Groups in Para Sport

Para Sport Medicine

Overview

Para sport is open to athletes who have one of seven eligible impairment types recognised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), and classification then groups athletes by how much their impairment affects performance in a given sport, so that the outcome is decided by factors other than impairment. The seven types are five physical impairments, together with vision impairment and intellectual impairment, and each must arise from an underlying health condition. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) clinician the tasks are knowing the eligible impairment types, understanding how classification works, and appreciating the medical considerations that differ across impairment groups. This page covers the eligible impairment types, how classification works, and the medical considerations across impairment groups.
