Consent and Capacity

Medical Ethics and Law

Overview

Consent is the process by which a patient authorises their care, and it respects the athlete's right to decide while supporting lawful, accountable care. For the sport and exercise medicine (SEM) doctor, consent arises constantly, from routine examinations and injections to decisions made quickly at the pitch-side, and it is closely tied to the question of capacity, the ability to make a particular decision. This page sets out what makes consent valid, how capacity is assessed, and how both apply in the sporting setting. The practical mechanics of consent and record-keeping at events are covered further in the related material on duty of care, consent and records.
